The safety of our community must be a priority, please help us make a difference.
On January 2, 2010 at 8:00 PM two pedestrians crossing Main Street in Smithtown were hit by an automobile. This was the second and third pedestrians hit on this road in the last 40 days. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION BELOW IF YOU SUPPORT TAKING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING MEASURES THAT WOULD MAKE MAIN STREET SAFER FOR PEDESTRIANS
1. DECREASE THE SPEED LIMIT TO 20 MILES PER HOUR AND HAVE IT STRICTLY ENFORCED.
2. PROHIBIT ALL RIGHTS ON RED ONTO MAIN STREET AND HAVE IT STRICTLY ENFORCED.
3. ENSURE THAT ELECTRONIC CROSSING MECHANISMS WORK SO THAT PEDESTRIANS CAN APPROACH A CROSSWALK WHERE THERE IS A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND THE LIGHT WILL CHANGE SO THEY CAN THEN CROSS.
4. HAVE ADDITIONAL CROSSWALKS PAINTED ONTO MAIN STREET BETWEEN TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND STRICTLY ENFORCE THE LAW REQUIRING TRAFFIC TO STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN A CROSSWALK.
These actions can be done at minimal cost to the taxpayers and maximum effect to increase safety on this busy thoroughfare.
